Growing up as a minority in this city it isn't hard to end up o the wrong path. For my community service I choose to volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club and Mailings Enchanting Treats.
When I was younger my mother sent me to a Boys and Girls Club so I kinda already knew the background of what I was getting into. I loved the Boy's and girls Club as a kids and I still do. I kinda wish there were younger kids at the one I was at but I still had fun. All the kids were 14 and up so I felt like "how am I supposed to mentor these kids?" I didn't think someone so close to my age would be influenced by me but I was wrong. When I came in I always sat down and did my homework and eventually the kids started too. When we were done the boys would play basketball and I would sit with the girls. We would watch TV, sit on their phones and sit there and gossip to me about the people on their timelines. It was also great because the girls looked up to me like a big sister. They came to me for advice and it just melted my heart that they've gotten so close to me over a short period of time. Around 6 I would go in the kitchen an help prepare dinner and serve the kids. After everyone had ate they still can stay until closing or go home. I enjoyed the experience but they still didn't have anything on the Boys and Girls Club I went to as a kid.
On the other hand I also volunteered at Mailings Enchanting Treats. And old friend of my mom's owns a cake business and I told her I would be interested into coming there for a few hours here and there. While I was there I answered the phones and set up appointments. When Marteasha was making simple treats she would let me help out icing in the bags or ice them myself, put the cakes and other items in boxes and write the person's names on them. When it was time for a delivery we would drive to where they were and I would set up the cakes or just hand them their order. This was also fun because I got to witness how these delicious pastries etc are hand made instead of watching it on TV. Maybe one day I'll be able to make them on my own just for fun or as my own business.
I really enjoyed volunteering and I hope to continue when I go off to college. Rochester has a lot going on there so I'm sure I'd find something to do pretty easily.
